The chief executive of the FA has spoken out about scrapping the One Love armband.


Captains of a number of European teams planned to use this armband during the 2022 World Cup to protest against all types of discrimination, but abandoned this idea due to possible sanctions from FIFA.


It is very important to understand what happened. We made it clear that we wanted to wear it and we were determined. We announced that we would do this back in September, during which time we had many meetings with FIFA and on the Saturday before the game predictions by best tipster we reached an understanding. We didn`t have a permit, but we were threatened with a fine.


Unfortunately, on the day of the game, they gave us ten minutes` notice - two hours before we were supposed to go to the game. . . they came here with five officials and presented us with a scenario where, at a minimum, anyone wearing thisbandage, will be fined and in addition subject to disciplinary sanctions.


They [disciplinary sanctions] were unlimited. They would take disciplinary action against any player who wore the armband. However, this is unclear, they just said they will take disciplinary action, and obviously this implies unlimited consequences.


Again, we could say a lot of different things and all I can say is that we have strong feelings. We`re disappointed, we`re angry, we think the way it was done is outrageous. This will not help us achieve the effect we wanted to achieve. We wanted to show our support to the community, but were unable to do so.


We felt we couldn`t put the players in that position - they could lose the opportunity to play at the World Cup. Suddenly they might be facing disqualification and that`s not the scenario we wanted to give them.


I really think that respect for basic human rights should be used as a criterion for awarding the tournament, and that is an absolutely necessary part of the discussions. And this should be done at the moment when countries submit bids to host the World Cup, and not during the discussions that take place in the preparation for the start of the tournament.


I agree with the principle that any country bidding to host the World Cup must uphold a basic level of human rights, and we must talk about it. I understand the pain that [LGBTQ+] communities feel and this [removing the bandage] is the last thing we wanted to do.
