Bob Bryan commented on the selection of players for the doubles match against Australia. On Thursday, the USA captain put Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul in the deciding pairing. They lost to Jordan Thompson and Matthew Ebden - 4:6, 4:6.
The pair have a great opportunity to help the team. We have the experienced duo of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krycek and singles players with great potential. I made the decision at the last minute and I don’t regret anything. I expected to catch the Australians by surprise, but they showed a high level and played well. I`m proud of the way we fought, with this great team we could have won, we have the talent and ability, but we stopped within an inch of the semi-finals.
Between matches we have 15 minutes to discuss and that`s when I made my decision. We were expected by Jordan Thompson, an experienced doubles player, US Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, and Matthew Ebden, Olympic champion. Both have played frequently with Krycek and Rahm in recent years, but not with Ben and Tommy. This was the tactic: I wanted to take them by surprise, and we fought to the end, but they turned out to be stronger. They are one of the best teams in the world and they have proven it by playing at an outstanding level.
A captain has to make difficult decisions, but my choice was supported by a lot of information. We trained on our site for six days, knew how everyone was feeling, and knew a lot about the opponents, especially the ones we were playing against. Everything is based on analysis: you communicate with other coaches, with players, fortunately, on our site, my brother [Mike] and other great specialists. We got together and made this decision, realizing that we were walking on the edge. As I said, I don`t regret what I did.
