Juan Mata became co-owner of San Diego. On Wednesday, the club, which will enter MLS in 2025, announced the acquisition of a stake by the ex-Manchester United player. Mata, who plays for Australia`s Western Sydney, became the first active foreign player to acquire a stake in an MLS club. Until now, the only foreign footballer to co-own an MLS club was David Beckham, who owns a stake in Inter Miami.
One of the owners of San Diego and the president of the club, Mohammed Mansour, owns the chain of Right to Dream academies, of which Mata is a partner.
Joining San Diego is a great opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that is experiencing incredible growth. This club`s and Right to Dream`s commitment to community impact, improvement, and the pursuit of long-term success aligns perfectly with my personal values.
I look forward to sharing my experience and passion for the game and working together to build a club that inspires on and off the field, ” said Mata.
